About the job

Vice President of Engineering

Cambridge, MA (4 Days Onsite)

up to $400k base + equity,

I'm working with an elite AI-for-science initiative backed by one of the most successful venture creation platforms in the world.

The team is building AI systems that accelerate scientific discovery across biology, healthcare, sustainability, and other frontier research domains. Their work spans LLMs, machine learning platforms, scientific reasoning systems, and AI products that help researchers uncover patterns in complex datasets and generate entirely new scientific hypotheses.

Unlike most AI companies, success here isn't measured by clicks, engagement, or ad revenue. The goal is to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery itself.

This is a highly unusual VP Engineering opportunity.

You'll lead a team composed almost entirely of Principal Engineers, each acting as the technical authority for their own product area. These are highly autonomous builders who work directly with scientists, researchers, and company founders to develop AI-native products and platforms.

This is not a role focused on process management or organizational bureaucracy.

You'll remain deeply involved in technical decision-making, spending meaningful time on architecture, system design, and engineering strategy while helping scale a team operating at an exceptionally high technical bar.

You'll work on problems such as:

• Building AI platforms used across a portfolio of cutting-edge science and technology companies

• Developing systems that combine LLMs, machine learning, scientific reasoning, and large-scale data analysis

• Supporting researchers working across biology, chemistry, healthcare, and computational science

• Making high-impact architecture and build-vs-buy decisions across multiple products

• Scaling an organization composed primarily of principal-level engineers

• Creating an AI-native engineering culture where modern tools and workflows materially increase productivity

We're looking for leaders who have:

• Led senior engineering organizations composed of Staff, Principal, or highly autonomous engineers

• Personally owned architecture for complex production systems

• Built and scaled products in startup, research, or highly ambiguous environments

• Experience translating technical strategy into organizational direction

• A track record of hiring exceptional engineers and raising the technical bar over time

• Strong written communication and technical leadership skills.

Looking for -

• Experience building products for scientists, researchers, or technical experts

• Background in machine learning, AI, computational biology, chemistry, physics, or related domains

• Experience working at the intersection of research and engineering

• Experience building 0→1 products in emerging technical areas

• Exposure to life sciences, biotech, healthcare, or scientific discovery.

This role is ideal for leaders who want to stay technically credible while helping shape the future of AI-driven scientific discovery. You'll work alongside exceptional engineers, researchers, and founders while helping build the systems that power the next generation of breakthrough companies.

Lets chat.
