Principal Python Engineer (Modelling & Simulation)

LB62
  • $200,000 - $250,000
  • Boston, MA
  • Permanent

About the role:

We are hiring a hands-on Python engineer to build and operate production-grade modeling and simulation systems.

You’ll take ownership across architecture, implementation, deployment, and ongoing operation—designing scalable software that performs reliably in complex, constrained environments. This is a backend and systems-focused role for an engineer who enjoys solving ambiguous problems, defining clean system boundaries, and shipping maintainable software.

What you’ll do:

  • Design, build, deploy, and operate Python systems for modeling and simulation.
  • Develop robust APIs, data models, distributed workflows, queues, and state machines.
  • Make thoughtful architectural decisions around performance, reliability, data structures, and system boundaries.
  • Build resilient failure-handling, testing, observability, and CI practices.
  • Debug complex production issues and improve system scale, performance, and reliability.
  • Integrate Python services with C++ components and simulation platforms.
  • At senior levels, mentor engineers and help shape foundational technical direction while remaining hands-on.

What we’re looking for:

  • Strong production Python backend engineering experience.
  • Clear ownership of software from initial design through deployment and operation.
  • Experience building APIs, distributed systems, workflow engines, queues, or stateful services.
  • Strong software design, testing, CI, and production-debugging skills.
  • Credible experience with C++.
  • Exposure to AFSIM or comparable modeling and simulation platforms.
  • Evidence of building scalable, reliable systems—not only scripts, notebooks, prototypes, or basic CRUD applications.
  • The ability to explain technical trade-offs and your personal contribution to shipped systems.

Experience in defense, autonomy, robotics, planning, logistics, geospatial systems, or similarly constrained technical domains is especially relevant.
